We serve an awesome, powerful and loving God whose desire is to have us live with Him forever. However, He is also a holy and just God, and our human sinful state (Romans 3:23) wouldn't survive in His presence. Therefore, He gave His Son to die for us. He, Jesus, being sinless took the punishment we deserved. But God also gave man free will to choose to accept the sacrifice Jesus made - to choose life. It is a simple choice, but one that affects your eternity. In essence you choose to accept Jesus as your Savior and Lord, that because of His life and death you now have access to God. And not just access, but by accepting Jesus, you also become a son or daughter to Him. It is your choice.
Do you want the forgiveness of your sins and a place in the family of God? Here are some steps you can take:
A. Admit you have sinned.....
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23)
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
B. Believe in Jesus.....
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16).
"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him" (John 14:6,7).
C. Ask Him to be Lord of your life....
"For Christ's love compels us...and He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and was raised again" (2 Cor. 5:14,15).
Before a person can be born again God must reveal certain truths to his or her heart. Without the help of the Holy Spirit no one can understand spiritual truth let alone sincerely respond to it. Start by asking God to "show me myself". The Holy Spirit will reveal that our greatest sin is that we have tried to live independently without Jesus Christ, wanting neither His lordship nor His holiness to interfee with the way we live (Jn 16:9).
Next, ask God to "show me Jesus." I must believe that His death on the cross has completely paid the penalty for all my sin, and I must believe that as I "cling" to Jesus, God will give me the gift of eternal life.
You might want to use the following prayer as a guide:
Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that I'm a sinner, and I'm sorry for my sin. Thank You for dying on the Cross for me. Please forgive me of my sin, and accept me as Your child. I invite you to be Lord of my life for I desire to live for You, Jesus. Amen.
